How to boost your communication with Special Effects (FX)

Special Effects (FX) is a rigging technique that allows addition or removal of elements on live action shots that were not present initially.

Contrary to image correction that is commonly called ‘’Photoshopped’’ (thanks to the notorious eponymous software that dominates the market), we can erase, add and even enhance elements that have been captured with a camera after the production.

These techniques are mainly used to improve the filmed project while adding new settings or creating spectacular visual effects.

There is no such thing as a specific technique per se, as they combine different graphic styles following the storytelling conveyed by the video.

For example, during the renovation project of the Lagrasse’s abbey asked by Father Louis-Marie de Saint-Jean that we produced with Maxyma and ASMVAL, we have used 3D/2D movement tracking to virtually view the modifications that were going to be made to the building.

Movement tracking is an interesting technique that allows to emulate virtually the camera’s movement during the footage capture.

Furthermore, it gives us the possibility of adding 3D (volume) or 2D (Drawings) graphic elements that are perfectly synchronized with the reality of the original shot.

In our case, adding visual elements helped us to easily visualize the major items of the abbey’s renovation.

Here’s another example of the process, as we will have another opportunity to better explain the project later on.

We had also been called upon by Day On Mars to produce the 3D part of the MAGELIS movie for Schneider and use the same technique on it.
There was an issue where footage could not be kept because of the bruises on a dancer’s feet. However, the scene was very important for the agency.

We proceeded to apply digital makeup on the bruises in order to solve the problem and keep the original footage usable.

One of our studio’s strengths lies also in the capacity of applying this technique on 360° videos, like on Mediatronic’s project of a video visit of their production facility.
We were able to create a CGI character that served as host for the tour, conveying the feeling of actually moving in the environment along the visitor, wearing a VR Headset.

There is a plethora of possibilities to emancipate ourselves from film shooting issues, like deleting sensible elements or enhancing the storytelling via graphic effects, for the sky’s the only limit !

We will always be available to guide or inform you about the latest techniques and news, do not hesitate to call upon us.

We look forward to collaborating with you.
